First Release of NeST
Announcing the first official release of NeST, or the Near Surface Toolkit, which offers a fully integrated solution to near surface seismic imaging and processing.
I am pleased to announce the official First Release of our flagship product: the Near Surface Toolkit, or what we like to call NeST. As I hinted at the end of our Origin Story: Part 1, NeST is our solution to the current, overly complex processing schemes required for the successful application of a variety of seismic methods and approaches, especially those suited for engineering scale problems.
With this software, we will remove the barriers that have prevented many from even entertaining the idea of regularly employing these valuable approaches, whether as a geophysical consultant, or even in-house for larger geotechnical firms. In the future, keep an eye out for a variety of case-studies and application posts, where we will start highlighting real use cases for there methods and specifically, NeST.
What went into developing it?
The term “First Release” is being thrown around and I do not want you to think that this is some “half-baked” or “beta” level piece of software.
NeST has gone through a rigorous develop process over the last 5-years. The first 3+ years, an iterative design process took place to find the best overall architecture to support the long term development and extension of this software to more advanced features and methods in the future. Mike’s 30+ years of software design experience offered the foresight on how best to architect NeST to be robust now, while maintaining future design flexibility.
We reached our “Beta” stage in March of 2024, in which we began reaching out to other experts in the field to put NeST through its paces. These Beta testers have depth in both experience and knowledge of thee various seismic approaches we employ. Outside testing was an integral part to our development process, not only because it helps catch most of the bugs, but gives us additional perspectives into the overall flow and usability of the software. Things that might have seemed crystal clear to us, was clear as mud to our testers. Many minor and some major adjustments were made based on the input from our code testers and NeST would not be what it is today without this process. We are incredibly grateful for their time and thoughtful input.
The last year and a half has been spent largely testing, validating, and improving upon all aspects of our product to ensure our First Release delivers on what we set out to do, create a truly unified software solution for near surface seismic imaging methods.

What makes NeST a “Unified Software”?
Firstly, the above seismic methods are contained within a single application, unifying these two usually separate processes; however, what really makes NeST unified is the complete handling of all the data, from start to finish. The user is never asked to handle any intermediate files and data is read in once at the beginning, and only exposed to files again when exporting results. This is accomplished by having:
